PISA result was just released comparing education systems around the world. U.S. ranks about the middle, 19 out of 35 countries in science. But Donald Trump and Betsy Devos are using PISA to push education privatization with school vouchers and uncontrolled unaccountable charter school expansion. But is it the right strategy? Let's look at 2 countries, Sweden and Poland . Starting in the 1990s, Sweden privatized their school much like Trump is proposing. The number of for-profit private school increased tenfold, math, science and reading scores droped. In 2000, Sweden ranked 10^th in science, in 2015, it's ranked 22^nd, below the U.S.

Studies show that privatization has brought low teacher morale, less qualified teachers, increased segregation and fewer opportunities for poor children.

Now let's look at Poland, in 2000, Poland's piece of scores were far below the United States. They doubled education spending in the last 25 years. In 2002, they created new exam used only as a diagnostic for improving instruction and placing students.

In 2004, they freed teachers from a constrictive curriculum, giving them independence to innovate. They reinvigorated vocational education with a broad robust curriculum and 3-year apprenticeship.  And they have continually increased funding and access to early childhood education.

These reforms has paid off. In science, Poland went from 21st in 2000 to 16 in 2015, switching places with Sweeden, ranking above the U.S…
